Choose by voice, not by portrait
Read the profile before you pick. The register of a companion matters far more than the photograph, and the profiles are written to make that register obvious.
Open with something small and true
The best first line is rarely clever. “Long day” or “cannot sleep” gives a companion far more to work with than a formal greeting.
Say what kind of company you want
Light talk, a story in chapters, or somewhere to think out loud. Naming it in the first minute saves ten minutes of circling.
Steer without apology
If the tone drifts, say so directly: slower, warmer, funnier, shorter. Companions adjust immediately and hold the new setting.
Let stories run over several evenings
Serial fiction is where these conversations are strongest. Ask for a chapter rather than a whole tale and come back to it.
Keep the limits in mind
A companion is fiction and will say so. For anything medical, legal or urgent, talk to a qualified human being.
